September 2015 SGO Event Wrap Up

In Blog, Events by Rachel Murray

We had so much fun at our September event, sponsored (for the third year in a row!) by O’Reilly Media. The event took place in their brand new space downtown—word on the street is that we were the largest event they’ve had there so far! There was yummy food, cupcakes, a fancy open bar, and super chill lovely ladies to hang out with.

We were treated to an opening from O’Reilly’s own Laurel, who curated the speaker lineup for this event. We had three speakers, each of whom presented a talk around the theme of learning. Monica (a Nieman Fellow at Harvard) kicked things off for us with her talk ‘Learning to Write Well’. She gave us some great tips on how to write, and write well! Next, Natalie talked about ‘Learning How to Rethink Science’, discussing her work with BioBuilder– inspiring tomorrow’s innovators by making current biology research accessible and engaging. Finally, Cathy, a web developer at MGH, talked about ‘Learning to Doodle’. Doodling isn’t just something you do in a boring meeting—it’s play. Cathy brought handouts for the crowd and we were able to make our own doodles! Check out some of our creations on Twitter.

As always, we wrapped up the event with the raffles. We gave away some fun Star Wars-themed items, plus our standard Wonder Woman socks—always a hit! The evening ended with more mingling, hanging out, and targeted networking for those so inclined. One new change we debuted this month was the addition of smiley face stickers to indicate whether you were hiring, looking, it’s complicated, or just happy. Surprisingly, the ‘it’s complicated’ option was a big hit!

Attendees left with full bellies, some fun doodles, and free books from O’Reilly. If you are interested in seeing more photos from the event, head on over to our Facebook page.
