Meet Tacita Morway, Senior Engineering Manager at Salsify

In Blog, Speakers by Felicia Jadczak

Tacita Morway is a Senior Engineering Manager at Salsify, where she works in support of a 25 person engineering team. She will be giving a talk titled “Criticism in the Workplace” at our April event at Salsify (tickets still available!). You can find and follow her on Twitter!

Tacita earned a B.S. in Computer Science from Wellesley College, which she later complimented with a B.F.A in Painting and Drawing from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

In previous career incarnations Tacita ran her own landscaping company, operated large earth moving equipment and was an auto mechanic.  She spends much of her time being tackled by her two children, and taking on construction projects that she probably should not take on.

How (and when) did you get into your current field or company?
I’ve been in and out of software engineering for the last two decades.  I started moving into technical management roles about 10 years ago, holding titles such as Director of Technology, VP of Engineering and Engineering Manager.  All of which equate to being a problem solver, and a people manager whose job it is to make life as easy as possible for the impressive engineers that are fantastically getting critical things done every day.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Working with my engineering team to understand how I can best help them do their job.  Working with them one-on-one to advance their professional growth and development.  Collaborating with my colleagues across the company to put out fires, and where necessary grease wheels.  Desperately searching my calendar for any white space.  Eating all the sugar I can anytime, anywhere.

What is the favorite part of your day?
The laughing parts.  I happen to work with some absurdly hilarious people and they crack me and each other up all the time.  So there’s lots of laughter around here which is pretty fantastic.

What excites you about working in your industry?
The variety of things that technology can enable and impact is mind blowing.  Technology is such a rich medium for problem solving.  It’s exciting and inspiring to watch what people across the globe are creating through engineering.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
For the rougher days: “This too shall pass”

What is your favorite part of being a woman in your industry?
Those moments when something happens that reminds me that it makes a difference for people to see a woman in a leadership role.

What other women inspire you?
I’m constantly inspired by the women in my life, the women I read about, that I hear about, the women in my family, my colleagues, women from the history books, women making their marks on the world today.  I see strength, patience, perseverance, empathy, articulation, bravery… I can’t enumerate the people anymore than I can enumerate all the things that inspire me about them each day.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

  • I am of the opinion that dancing makes everything better.
  • I am incapable of remembering names. It’s a supremely annoying failure mode.

What do you geek out about?

  • IoT
  • Furniture design
  • Junk food
  • Animals
  • Exercise
  • The Voice ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
