Join us for this special Power Up Workshop! Management 101:
Build skills for working with other humans

Talented managers of people and project teams can get more done and be happier while doing it. We all know super talented technical folx that aren’t great at motivating or managing their teams. Perhaps you’ve worked for one or worry that you are or could become one. It’s a completely different skill set, so it’s understandable! Here’s the good news: management is a skill you can learn and at which you can excel. Even if you aren’t a manager yet, start learning now for how to effectively manage and work with teams. In this virtual workshop, Joanne Kamens, Executive Director of Addgene, shares her best practices for leading teams effectively.

Agenda

12pm-12:30pm: Networking! We’ll have table topics for people to virtually join, up to six to a table

12:30pm-1:30pm: Workshop

1:30pm-2pm: More networking!

Facilitator

Joanne Kamens

Joanne received her PhD in Genetics from Harvard University, where she studied signaling pathways. She spent 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry at Abbott Research Center and moved into the biotechnology sector as Senior Director of Research Collaborations at RXi Pharmaceuticals. Joanne also has extensive experience with leadership of nonprofit organizations. She founded the Massachusetts chapter of the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) and is Director of Mentoring for the Boston chapter of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association (HBA).

How is this going to work?

This will NOT be a Zoom meeting (yay!)… you’ll be able to network in small groups of up to six people per table prior to and after the webinar. You get to choose where you ‘sit’ and there will be lots of pre-created topics that will be work and fun-related (furbaby and humanbaby pictures, book ideas, TV show obsessions, all welcome here).

During the panel, you’ll be able to chat and ask panelists questions, which can be upvoted! You’ll get all the info on how to access the platform ahead of time and below is a screenshot of what you can expect it to look like when you’re in and virtually talking with people!

Thanks so much to Addgene for sponsoring!

This event is a womxn-focused event that intends an inclusive definition of womxn. We are welcoming and respectful of womxn, including trans womxn and those who are nonbinary, gender non-conforming, and anyone who identifies as a womxn in a way that is significant to them. We also welcome allies who are committed to creating environments that are supportive of people who are typically underrepresented in the workplace and beyond.

Please make sure to read our code of conduct before coming to our event!

“I absolutely loved the tables! IRL events I have horrible social anxiety so it’s super hard for me to dive into a conversation by walking up to a group. Having these set topics made me feel instantly welcomed and able to really get into the topics with everyone. I wish more events were run this way.”

“For being a virtual event, it was surprisingly easy to engage and feel connected to people. I loved the UI with the tables and table topics, and the speaker part worked very well too.”

“Wonderful content and great conversations. This was my first event and I found it very valuable. I also loved the virtual interface, it’s very user-friendly.”

“The speeches were intriguing and the online forum was incredible! The virtual chairs and tables where attendees could mingle, offered a perfect alternative to physical meetups during our time of social distancing.”

Land Acknowledgement

She+ Geeks Out was originally founded on land that is the traditional territory of the Massachusett and Pawtucket tribes, and which is still home to descendants of these peoples. At this point in time, the SGO team is fully remote, and we are located across the United States. Land acknowledgements are a way for us to reflect upon the duality of our work— while we work within our team, our community, and our client organizations to promote greater inclusivity and abolish inequities, we ourselves still perpetuate and contribute to various forms of historical and present oppression. We are now operating in a virtual space, but we can still honor and name the physical spaces we all inhabit. We encourage you to learn more about the lands you are currently on and reflect on your own place in this work.
