SGO Virtual DEI Meetup: Practicing Allyship as DEI Practitioners and Advocates

May 27 @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

The terms allyship, diversity, equity, and inclusion (‘DEI’) have come under scrutiny due to how we approach and practice them. While we may strive to support people who have been socially marginalized, or dismantle structures that create advantages and disadvantages for certain groups of people, the outcomes do not always align with our intentions. Now more than ever, it is important for us to reflect on our roles and positionalities if we are to create sustainable change. During this month’s meetup we will explore:

– the meaning and frameworks of allyship and DEI

– the social implications of privilege and non-privilege

– tips on how to approach and embody allyship in the DEI field

Speakers:

Candice Belanoff, ScD, MPH,  Associate Professor, Boston University School of Public Health

Felicia Jadzcak, MBA, Co-CEO and Head of Training, She+ Geeks Out

Jess Lee, MBA, Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, City Year

How is this going to work?

We’ll be sending out a calendar invite to all attendees one week prior to the event. In that invite, you’ll get a bunch of details on how it works, as well as a list of virtual table topics that we’ll pre-set for you to assist in our virtual networking (don’t worry, we’ll leave some room for random on-the-fly conversations too, you can just consider these icebreakers!). You won’t need to download any software, but for the best experience we recommend having a computer with both camera and microphone capability.

Agenda:

5:00-5:30pm- Event check-in begins; small group introductions

5:45-6:00pm- Welcome, SGO intro, housekeeping/announcements, intro to panelists

6:00-6:30pm- Moderated panel with guest speakers

6:30-7:00pm- Moderated Q&A with audience

7:00-7:30pm- Closing and open networking

Land Acknowledgement

She+ Geeks Out was originally founded on land that is the traditional territory of the Massachusett and Pawtucket tribes, and which is still home to descendants of these peoples. At this point in time, the SGO team is fully remote, and we are located across the United States. Land acknowledgements are a way for us to reflect upon the duality of our work— while we work within our team, our community, and our client organizations to promote greater inclusivity and abolish inequities, we ourselves still perpetuate and contribute to various forms of historical and present oppression. We are now operating in a virtual space, but we can still honor and name the physical spaces we all inhabit. We encourage you to learn more about the lands you are currently on and reflect on your own place in this work.
